"Grown Ass Man"

Many of my friends are executive coaches.  They’ve trained extensively and developed a tremendous sense of intuition which compels them into an obedience to listen to and act on what they intuit.  This superpower makes them tremendously powerful.  They can be fabulously helpful when I want help and a complete pain when I don’t.

On one such occasion, I was catching up with a coach-friend.  After some time of life updates and logistics, she pivoted her questions beyond my latest source of income and travel schedule to my inner world-view. I shared some open questions I’ve been wrestling with.  I was proud of my feeble attempt at vulnerability, if I do say so myself.  At least I was until she gently reminded me that we’d been having this same conversation off and on for several years.  I became defensive at the suggestion of being seen.

‘But you’re doing it.  Now.,’ she exhorted.  'Whatever it is you think you want, this is it.’ Suddenly I heard the squealing of tires, but realized it was only in my head.  Here’s to hoping she stopped before we hit the wall.

‘You’re a grown ass man.’ she admonished, going in for the kill.  ‘Look, this is it.  There is no dress rehearsal. You have kids and a mortgage and life insurance.  What else are you waiting on?”

‘But, what about…’ and ‘I haven’t figured out…’ I fired back, hoping that some ricochet of her interrogation would bounce back.

"Great.  Just do the next right thing. And then do the next thing after that.  This is what you’re doing now"

I picked my ego up off the floor, reminding myself that she was in my corner.  She is for me.  Her intuition was dialed-in to me and she used it to serve me.  And she’s right.

This is the life I’ve been preparing for.  There is no ‘figure it out eventually.’  Welcome to it.  Now go do work.
